The Georgia Trail is a self-guided trail. This means you’ll hike the entire route independently. We’ll make sure you have everything you need for a successful trek. Everything is arranged for you, so you won’t have to worry about a thing. All you need to do is walk and enjoy the experience.
Because a trail’s difficulty depends on several factors, we’ve put together a clear overview of them for you.
Anyone between 16 and 65 years old who is in good shape and has a sense of adventure can take on this trail. The trip involves a fair amount of physical activity, so good health is essential. Keep in mind that weather conditions can be changeable.
Would you like to try your first multi-day hike but aren’t sure about your fitness level? These questions can help you decide:
If your answers give you full confidence to set off on an adventure, this trail is definitely for you! One week after booking, you’ll receive a training plan to help you prepare and complete the trail comfortably.
Still not sure and would you like to put yourself to the test before setting off on a trail?
Our micro-adventures are the perfect way to get a feel for the trail experience, closer to home. The micro-trails in the Vosges and Mullerthal are great preparation, with accessible hikes, beautiful nature and just enough of a challenge to give you an idea of what a multi-day hiking adventure feels like. It’s the perfect way to get into the trail mindset.
Over the course of the week, you’ll walk around 62 km in total. The stages range from 11 to 21 km, with a longer day on day 5 (21 km). The days are well paced and balanced, creating a good mix of distance covered and elevation gained.
The guesthouses where we stay always have toilets. There’s also a shower at every location, but during a particularly dry summer, the water pressure may be low or there may be no water at all. You won’t find any toilet facilities during the hikes, though. So when nature calls, you’ll have to answer the adventurous way. Luckily, there are usually plenty of rocks or other secluded spots nearby where you can find some privacy.
We follow a Leave No Trace policy, which means we aim to leave nature as undisturbed as possible. That’s why we ask everyone to bring small bags for toilet paper and other waste. You can dispose of them properly at the next guesthouse.
During the trek, you’ll often have phone reception, but not always. Let your friends and family know so they don’t worry if they can’t reach you. You’ll usually have reception somewhere every other day.
Please note: Your regular mobile plan won’t apply in Georgia, which can result in high roaming charges. You can buy a SIM card at the Airport. (We recommend Magti.) You can also install an eSIM if your smartphone supports it.
It’s not generally possible to leave the trail or skip a day of hiking. From Mestia, the starting point, you can arrange transport back to Kutaisi, but you’ll always have to pay for this yourself. The villages are very remote, so getting back from there isn’t straightforward and can be expensive.
It’s always worth checking your travel insurance beforehand to find out what it covers in case of an injury.
For meals provided by local people, we can cater for dietary requirements if you let us know in advance, but for freeze-dried meals (food packs), we recommend that you bring your own food. As all freeze-dried meals are processed in the same facility, cross-contamination with allergens cannot be ruled out.
High-top hiking boots are mandatory. Low-cut walking shoes, running shoes, trainers, or other low-cut footwear are not permitted. The terrain is often uneven and challenging, so high-top hiking boots are required to provide adequate ankle support and reduce the risk of injury.
When making a booking, you can choose how much flexibility you want. Check the different booking conditions, as well as the corresponding payment, modification and cancellation conditions.
