The Magic of the Caucasus

Georgia is one of the most untouched and mystical mountain countries in the world. The Georgia Trail takes you along the spectacular route from Mestia to Ushguli, the ultimate classic for an adventure in the High Caucasus. This trail is renowned worldwide as one of the most impressive mountain hikes in Europe and Asia.

For four days, you’ll trek through the rugged wilderness of Svaneti, a region where time seems to have stood still. Along the way, you’ll hike at the foot of the mighty Tetnuldi Glacier, cross flower-filled valleys and pass centuries-old defensive towers listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. With the snow-capped peaks of Shkhara constantly on the horizon, it feels like a journey through a forgotten kingdom, far from the modern world.

Frequently asked questions for your trip to Georgia

You can always email us for more information about this trip. Below, you'll find answers to some frequently asked questions.

How are the hikes organized?

The Georgia Trail is a self-guided trail. This means you’ll hike the entire route independently. We’ll make sure you have everything you need for a successful trek. Everything is arranged for you, so you won’t have to worry about a thing. All you need to do is walk and enjoy the experience.

  • On the first day, our experienced ranger will give you a thorough briefing.
  • After that, you’ll set off independently on the manageable, well-balanced route we’ve mapped out for you.
  • Our handy trail app provides an overview of all the routes and important information for each day. In principle, this should allow you to complete the entire route independently.
  • We’ll also arrange the guesthouses along the trail for you.
  • Of course, the ranger is available to help whenever needed. You can contact them throughout the trip with any questions, and you’ll also see them at the guesthouse every evening.
Who is the Georgia Trail for?

Because a trail’s difficulty depends on several factors, we’ve put together a clear overview of them for you.

Anyone between 16 and 65 years old who is in good shape and has a sense of adventure can take on this trail. The trip involves a fair amount of physical activity, so good health is essential. Keep in mind that weather conditions can be changeable.

Would you like to try your first multi-day hike but aren’t sure about your fitness level? These questions can help you decide:

  • How physically active have I been over the past three months?
  • What types of physical activity do I do regularly, and for how long?
  • Have I had any recent injuries that could affect my ability to enjoy this adventure?
  • Can I comfortably walk 15 kilometres over hilly terrain?
  • Can I train over the coming months to prepare myself properly for this adventure?

If your answers give you full confidence to set off on an adventure, this trail is definitely for you! One week after booking, you’ll receive a training plan to help you prepare and complete the trail comfortably.

Still not sure and would you like to put yourself to the test before setting off on a trail?
Our micro-adventures are the perfect way to get a feel for the trail experience, closer to home. The micro-trails in the Vosges and Mullerthal are great preparation, with accessible hikes, beautiful nature and just enough of a challenge to give you an idea of what a multi-day hiking adventure feels like. It’s the perfect way to get into the trail mindset.

Where are we staying?

For a whole week, you’ll stay in guesthouses or small local hotels. Depending on the accommodation, you’ll share a room with one, two, three or, occasionally, four other travelers. We always do our best to room participants of the same gender together, but unfortunately, we can’t guarantee this every time.

What about food and drinks?
  • The “Georgia meals” option (189 €): 100% local.
This is the option we recommend most. It includes:
    • breakfast on days 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7
    • a packed lunch on days 3, 4, 5 and 6
    • dinner on days 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6
  • Hospitality comes first. Your meals are prepared “with love” by the families who welcome you. It’s a chance to discover local specialities while directly supporting the local economy.
  • Notes:
    • As your flight arrives late on day 1, we recommend bringing something to eat on the plane.
    • During the road trip to and from Mestia, we’ll try to stop somewhere you can buy food.

A vegetarian option is, of course, available.

What’s included in the base price?
  • Base price from €590 per person.

This price includes:

  • Planned route and complete logistical organization
  • Support from our experienced Dutch-speaking ranger
  • 6 nights in guesthouses or small hotels
  • Transport to and from the trail
  • Travelbase Trail app with all the information you need (tips & tricks, route, flight information…)

You can add various extra options to your trip.

What should I bring?

You’ll receive a packing list well in advance, with an overview of all the gear you’ll need.

The essentials are good hiking boots (at least category A/B, with solid ankle support), a backpack (around 40–50L), and protective rainwear.

  • Choose at least category A/B hiking boots that feel comfortable enough for a long trek.
  • Be prepared for changing weather. Good waterproof rainwear is absolutely essential, and don’t forget to pack a few warm layers too. Temperatures can drop sharply, especially in the evening.

You can also rent trekking poles from us if you like.

How many kilometres will I cover?

Over the course of the week, you’ll walk around 62 km in total. The stages range from 11 to 21 km, with a longer day on day 5 (21 km). The days are well paced and balanced, creating a good mix of distance covered and elevation gained.

What bathroom facilities are available along the trail?

The guesthouses where we stay always have toilets. There’s also a shower at every location, but during a particularly dry summer, the water pressure may be low or there may be no water at all. You won’t find any toilet facilities during the hikes, though. So when nature calls, you’ll have to answer the adventurous way. Luckily, there are usually plenty of rocks or other secluded spots nearby where you can find some privacy.

We follow a Leave No Trace policy, which means we aim to leave nature as undisturbed as possible. That’s why we ask everyone to bring small bags for toilet paper and other waste. You can dispose of them properly at the next guesthouse.
